20th game, Bangladesh Premier League, Dhaka

Mahedi Hasan had a dream debut as Comilla Victorians successfully defended 153 runs against Rangpur Raiders in the 20th game of the Bangladesh Premier League in Dhaka.

Chasing 154, Brendon McCullum (13) struck a six and a four in the second over of the chase while Chris Gayle (17) had a cautious approach at the other end. Mahedi (2-15) kept both the openers quiet before Gayle opened up smashing Hasan Ali (1-39) for a hat-trick of boundaries in the fourth over.

The introduction of Rashid Khan (2-19) dented Rangpur's momentum as they lost both Gayle and Kusal Perera (0) in the fifth over and further double strike from Mahedi saw McCullum and Shahriar Nafees (0) departing. By the end of the powerplay, Rangpur Riders were positioned 33 for four.

It was Mohammad Mithun (31) and Ravi Bopara (48 not out) helped Rangpur resurrect the innings with a 67 run stand for the fifth wicket but with the required run rate climbing, they were left with 57 to get off the final five.

Even though Mashrafe Mortaza (17) with his 11-ball cameo tried to keep Rangpur in the game, Comilla Victorians managed to hold on to their nerve to complete a 14 run victory despite Bopara remaining unbeaten.

Earlier, it was Imrul Kayes (47) and Marlon Samuels (41), who were the centre stage in Comilla Victorians' total of 153 for six.

The win has taken Comilla to the second position in the table while Rangpur lavish at the bottom.
