Steve Smith has been appointed as Australia's Test vice-captain and will lead the side against India for the remaining three Tests in the absence of the injured Michael Clarke.

Clarke struggled with back and hamstring injuries during the first Test, which Australia won by 48 runs, and has been ruled out of the rest of the series.

Brad Haddin, who led Australia during the final day when Clarke was unable to take the field, will act as Smith's vice-captain in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

The second Test begins at the Gabba on 17th December.
