Stone SP CC is a Club that has been at the forefront of League Cricket in Staffordshire for many years. Formed in 1891, we have played at our Lichfield Road ground in the town for all of that time. Lichfield Rd was the base for Staffordshire’s Gillette Cup and Nat West trophy games; as well as hosting Minor Counties matches vs Australia, South Africa and Pakistan in the 1990’s.
Famous ex-players include a certain SF Barnes, who finished his playing days with Stone CC in 1940 aged 67 years young! Joey Benjamin also pulled on our colours as have Pakistan Test players Qaiser Abbas and Mo Hussain. Over the years many of our players have represented Staffordshire (including current skipper Richard Harvey) and aficionados of Warwickshire & Minor Counties cricket will recognise the name of Russell Flower who was Professional and Captain of Stone for many years in the 70’s and 80’s.
More recently George Hawbrook won the young volunteer of the year OSCA, which led to him also being asked to be an Olympic Torch bearer
Ever breaking new boundaries in 2007 Stone CC merged with local neighbours Swynnerton Park CC. There had always been links through Lord Stafford as President of both clubs, and the resulting club is now known as Stone SP CC.
The combined club now operates 4 senior Saturday league teams, as well as a midweek side and a Sunday friendly side. We therefore have the challenge of finding 44 players every weekend! The appeal of playing at 2 of the finest venues in the county helps us in that endeavour. It also gives a huge opportunity for our youngsters and our senior sides are liberally seeded with our most talented juniors.
We have a long tradition of league and Talbot Cup success and our 1st X1 are the current Champions of the North Staffs & South Cheshire Premier League and retained their local T20 crown in 2014 too. We also compete in the prestigious ECB National KO as well as League and County Cup Competitions.
Nowadays our club ethos is to develop from within to create the first XI of tomorrow.
We are therefore especially proud of our burgeoning junior set up. Our junior membership at the last count numbered almost 200 children. That allows us to field no less than 12 junior teams per week which is more than anyone else in the area.
In 2014 we were able to give in excess of 130 boys and girls, from the age of 6 to 17, a game of cricket.
The cornerstone of our junior effort is our world famous “Friday Night is Cricket Night” (FNICN). FNICN combines our weekly junior training event with the opportunity for their parents to enjoy our social facilities.
With that depth of talent we also have a very healthy number of our juniors appearing regularly for Staffordshire.
With great teams both on and off the pitch, the town can be justifiably proud of Stone SP CC
