Sri Lankan fast bowler Suranga Lakmal has been ruled out of the two-Test series against Pakistan that begins later this week due to an ankle injury.

Lakmal was named in Sri Lanka's squad provided he could prove his fitness but he, unlike fellow fast bowler Shaminda Eranga, has been unable to do so.

Nuwan Pradeep, Dhammika Prasad and Chanaka Welagedara were also named in the squad as cover while Eranga has recovered from a hand injury he suffered in the first Test against South Africa.

Lakmal took four wickets in the recent 1-0 Test series defeat to South Africa but missed the 1-0 series win over England due to injury.

There, he was replaced in the squad by Rangana Herath and back in 2011, he missed out on a Test series in South Africa, also with an ankle injury.

"Lakmal has sustained severe swelling above his left ankle following the second test against South Africa and unfortunately he is out of the series," Angelo Mathews confirmed in his pre-match press conference.

The first Test begins in Galle tomorrow (6th August).
