India's middle-order batsman Suresh Raina has been ruled out of the opening game of the One-Day International series against New Zealand at Dharmasala on Sunday due to a viral fever.

The 29-year-old last played for India in the 50-over format in October 2015 and has been sidelined since then missing the series against Australia, Zimbabwe and also the Twenty20 International series against West Indies in Florida.

The injuries to Shikhar Dhawan and Lokesh Rahul presented the Uttar Pradesh batsman another chance to redeem himself at the international level but now will have to wait for his opportunity again.

In his time absent from international cricket, Raina led India Green in Duleep Trophy and managed scores of 35, 90 and 52.

The selectors have not named any replacement for Raina with the likes of Manish Pandey and Mandeep Singh already in the squad.

After their recent 3-0 series whitewash against New Zealand, India will lock horns with Kane Williamson's men in a five-match ODI series which will be played between 16th and 29th October.
