Chanderpaul, the son of WINDIES batting legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul, gathered an unbeaten 84 and was one of three Jaguars batsmen that completed half-centuries on the third day of their day/night, first round match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
Pacers Keon Joseph and Clifton Pestano then snared one wicket apiece – including former WINDIES batsman Kirk Edwards – to leave the Volcanoes on the back-foot, chasing 348 for victory.
At the same time, Barbados Pride, chasing 170 for victory, lost opener Anthony Alleyne in the final over, after WINDIES fast bowler Miguel Cummins led the demolition of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes second innings batting.
Joseph removed long-standing Volcanoes opener Tyrone Theophile for six in the first over of the Volcanoes’ chase before Pestano trapped Edwards lbw for four to leave the home team 30 for two.
But Kavem Hodge, not out on nine, and Tarryck Gabriel, not out on 33, batted through close to half-hour to the close to ease the tension for the Volcanoes.
Earlier, Chanderpaul batted doggedly to anchor the Jaguars’ batting, striking just three boundaries from 333 balls in close to seven hours of batting, as the visitors, resuming from their overnight total of 115 for three, worked to put themselves in an impregnable position.
Chanderpaul shared two significant stands: He put on 111 for the fourth wicket with night-watchman Pestano, whose career-best 69 included two fours and five sixes from 127 balls in just over 2 ½ hours; and shared an unbroken, 85-run, fifth-wicket stand with Christopher Barnwell, whose 61 from 81 balls in 98 minutes included two fours and two sixes hastened the declaration.
Alleyne was caught behind off WINDIES fast bowler Alzarri Joseph for six, prompting the close, on a day that started an hour late, due to wet conditions caused by rain.
Earlier, Cummins grabbed 3-29 from 14 overs to be the pick of the Pride bowlers, as the Hurricanes were dismissed in the final hour before the rescheduled close.
Part-time spinner Aaron Jones snared 2-11 from three overs and Justin Greaves supported with 2-29 from 10 overs.
Hurricanes batting again let them down and they relied upon 38 from Jeremiah Louis and 24 from Damion Jacobs – both batting in the bottom half of the order – to drag them to a respectable total. Opener Montcin Hodge made 26.
