The Barmy Army to support Lord’s Taverners Wicketz project
Youngsters from disadvantaged communities across the UK are to benefit from a partnership between the Lord’s Taverners and The Barmy Army in support of the Wicketz – a national programme using cricket to tackle social issues and build stronger communities.
The Barmy Army, the world-famous group of cricket fans who follow the England team at home and abroad, will be supporting the Wicketz project through a series of fundraising and events – starting on England’s tour to the West Indies later this month.
Wicketz gives opportunities to young people to take part in cricket and enjoy physical activity regardless of background, circumstances or ability.
The programme, which runs in 19 locations across the UK, is about more than getting young people playing cricket, it provides wider opportunities to develop social and personal skills such as confidence, respect, teamwork and leadership as well as health awareness and life skills workshops.
“We are delighted to be partnering with the Lord’s Taverners on such an important initiative that helps to support young people in some of the most deprived areas in the UK,” said Chris Millard, Managing Director of The Barmy Army.
“On visiting the Wicketz programme last year, I was made aware of the huge role cricket can play as a vehicle for social mobility, empowering young people and transforming communities, and knew The Barmy Army could help.
“We are incredibly proud to be supporting The Lord’s Taverners raise funds for this remarkable initiative.”
Paul Robin, Lord’s Taverners CEO, said: “Throughout the country, Wicketz is breaking down barriers and empowering young people to fulfil their potential and helping to build crucial life skills.
“Knife crime, confronting extremism, unemployment and encouraging healthy eating are just some of the local issues that the programme tackles across the country using cricket as the tool to engage young people from disadvantaged communities.
“We’re delighted to be partnering with The Barmy Army, bringing together two of cricket’s great organisations help lay the foundations for a positive future and build stronger communities across the UK – using the game that we all love.”
Along with Wicketz, the partnership will also see The Barmy Army support the Lord’s Taverners Kit Recycling Programme while on tour around the world with a cricket fixture between the Taverners Celebrity XI and The Barmy Army XI also planned.
