TNPL week one roundup -The Tamil Nadu Premier League begins with a bang
TNPL or the Tamil Nadu Premier League is a T20 tournament conducted by the TNCA (Tamil Nadu Cricket Association). This year is the third season of the league and it comprises of 8 teams.
The tournament lasts for roughly one month and will have 32 matches. It would be played at three different venues across Tamil Nadu. The Final will be held at Chepauk, the home ground of the Chennai Super Kings, on 12th August.
The league boasts of star Indian players from Tamil Nadu including Ravichandran Ashwin, Murali Vijay, Dinesh Karthik and Washington Sundar. While Ashwin and Vijay are seen in action, Dinesh Karthik is along with the Indian ODI squad touring England. Washington Sundar, on the other hand, was earlier in the Indian limited overs squad but is currently nursing an ankle injury.
TNCA also wished to rope in players from other Indian states and had made arrangements for the same but a last minute decision from the Honorable Supreme Court of India did not allow them to do so. However, the tournament is already underway and we are here with the roundup of the first week.
Each of the eight teams have played at least one match, while Ruby Trichy Warriors and Dindigul Dragons have played two matches each. By virtue of playing an extra match, Ruby Trichy Warriors are currently at the top of the points table as they have won both of their matches. Dindigul Dragons have lost one and won one out of their two matches and at the third place.
Again, with the benefit of having played two matches for Ruby Trichy Warriors, Suresh Kumar is the highest run scorer with 119 runs at a strike rate of more than 165. Kaushik Gandhi is at the second spot, owing to his unbeaten 111-run knock, in the only game that that he played, which remains the best knock of the TNPL hitherto.
With unbeaten scores of 68 and 70 Jagdishan and Vivek from Dindigul Dragons are one of the most successful batsmen.
It does not come as a surprise that Ravichandran Ashwin is leading the bowlers tally with 5 wickets in two matches. He has best figures of 25 for 3 and an average of 12, mind boggling as per T20 standards.
Ganpati Chandrashekhar is a close second with as many wickets as Ashwin. However, these stats are skewed due to one match in which he bowled brilliantly, giving away just 19 runs and bagging a five-fer. This was not the case in the other match in which he went wicketless.
Vignesh and Rajesh from Ruby Trichy Warriors and Lyca Kovai Kings are placed next with three wickets each.
Still being at the initial part of the league, these figures will certainly change. As we have seen over the course of time that some players tend to be late bloomers and spring out of nowhere in the middle or latter parts of the tournament.
All in all, most matches are going down to the wire and there is no dearth of entertainment. As the tournament approaches its business end, more action and stirring finishes are guaranteed.
