The opening match of the Indian Premier League 2014 will see reigning champions Mumbai Indians play Kolkata Knight Riders on 16th April in Abu Dhabi.

The first 20 matches of the competition will be hosted by Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah before the tournament moves back to Bangladesh or India for the final 40 games.

The Indian board (BCCI) is confident that matches will held in Indian states away from where vote counting is taking place during the general election in May.

"Pursuant to the initiative taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, many State Governments have indicated that IPL matches can be conducted in their respective states," a BCCI statement confirmed.

"Based on the responses received so far, the BCCI believes that the Pepsi IPL 2014 can be conducted in India from the first week of May."

The opening clash pits the reigning champions against the team that won the tournament in 2012 and is followed by Delhi Daredevils against Royal Challengers Bangalore one day later.

18th April sees the first double-header, in Abu Dhabi and the final game in the UAE is on 30th April, when Mumbai Indians play Sunrisers Hyderabad.

As it did in 2009, the IPL has been forced to move matches out of India this year due to the general election.

The results of this year's general election will be announced on 16th May and the final of the IPL is scheduled for 1st June.
