Uncapped Phillips, Astle in New Zealand squad for ODI series against India
New Zealand selectors have called up uncapped wicket-keeper batsman Glenn Phillips and leg-spinner Todd Astle for the upcoming three-match One-Day International series against India.
Chief selector Gavin Larsen had already announced a preliminary squad of nine members and now the remaining six players were picked from the New Zealand A squad that are currently on the tour of India.
Phillips, a hard-hitting opening batsman and has been touted as the next 'Brendon McCullum' has already played a Twenty20 International for New Zealand against South Africa in February and recently enjoyed a successful stint with Jamaica Tallawahs franchise in the Caribbean Premier League 2017.
He also smashed an unbeaten 140 against India in the second game of the series in Visakhapatnam.
Meanwhile, Astle has featured in two apiece of Tests and T20Is for the Black Caps but is yet to make an appearance in the 50-over format. He also enjoyed a productive four wicket haul in the second game against India A.
"Todd has been one of the best white-ball players in domestic cricket the last few seasons and he's backed that up with a strong showing for New Zealand A," said Larsen.
"Todd brings all-round skill to the squad, quality legspin, is athletic in the field as well as being able to contribute with the bat.
"Glenn has made an immediate effect in domestic cricket and has certainly taken his opportunity over here with New Zealand A, including an outstanding 140 not out.
"Glenn is an option for us with the gloves in both Twenty20s and ODIs, so we feel we have our bases covered with the 15 we've picked."
Apart from the duo, there have been recalls for Matt Henry, Henry Nicholls, Colin Munro and George Worker. Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi and Tom Bruce will replace Worker and Ross Taylor respectively in the T20I squad to face India.
