Update on Jason Gillespie's return to South Australia
SACA wishes to provide the following update on Jason Gillespie’s return to South Australia after Cricket Australia’s announcement of the Marsh Sheffield Shield fixture today.
Gillespie is currently scheduled to arrive in Adelaide on 6 October following the end of England’s T20 Vitality blast on 4 October, where he is coach of Sussex, and he will need to complete a mandatory 14-day isolation.
The travel arrangement means Gillespie will miss the West End Redbacks’ first Sheffield Shield match of the season against Western Australia starting Saturday, 10 October.
The former Test bowler was appointed Redbacks Head Coach in August.
“I’m excited about getting back to South Australia and getting to work.
“I’m really looking forward to it and I’d love to be there for the first game, however I know that the COVID-19 protocols are in place for the safety and wellbeing of us all so I look forward to linking up with the squad as soon as the isolation period is completed.”
The Redbacks’ pre-season program has been led by Luke Butterworth and Physical Performance Manager Stephen Schwerdt, as well as Greg Blewett since the start of June.
The squad has entered a block of internal trials in preparation for the beginning of the season.
SACA CEO Keith Bradshaw said:
“Whilst we would have loved to have Jason back as soon as the appointment was made, we are aware of his commitment to Sussex, and understanding of his need to fulfil these requirements prior to commencing his role with the Redbacks.
“COVID has meant there are some unusual hurdles to overcome, however we are confident that the group is progressing well, and Luke Butterworth will continue the excellent job he is doing until Jason becomes fully available.
“The appointment was made with a longer term (three-year contract) focus, and the short-term challenges we face do not alter this. Jason is in continual contact with players and staff and we are working to ensure the transition of the Head Coaching role from Luke is as seamless as possible.”
