South Africa pace bowler Vernon Philander will miss the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh after failing to make sufficient progress from a back injury.

He suffered the injury during the recently concluded Test series in England that saw him leave the field after bowling just five overs in the second innings of the opening Test at Lord's and was also forced to miss the fourth game in the series.

Philander was initially ruled out of the first game in Potchefstroom and was set to prove his fitness with Cape Cobras during the game against Warriors on Thursday but now will continue with his rehabilitation phase.

Earlier, former captain Graeme Smith slammed Philander's fitness but the 32-year-old has taken it in the right spirit.

"It's international sport, you'll always find criticism. As long as it's constructive, then I'm all for it. You've got to take it on the chin," said Philander to Independent Media.

"Myself and Faf had a good chat afterwards, the way the two of us nailed down things was quite constructive at the end of the day.

"As long as you're open and honest with each other, that's the key thing. He made his view clear and obviously I made mine clear to him. As long as we understand each other, we've got a road to walk together."

South Africa are also without Dale Steyn and Chris Morris due to injuries in the two match Test series against Bangladesh that kicked-off on Thursday.
