Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers shared a record shattering 229-run stand and slammed hundreds as Royal Challengers Bangalore posted 248 for three in 20 overs and then bowled Gujarat Lions for 104 runs to secure a massive 144-run win in the 44th match of the Indian Premier League in Bangalore.

Gujarat Lions opted to bowl after winning the toss with Brendon McCullum leading the side in place of Suresh Raina, who is in Netherlands for the birth of his first child.

Dhawal Kulkarni (1-33) and Praveen Kumar (2-45) started off with two tight overs. The pressure told when Chris Gayle (6) played onto his stumps trying to cut Kulkarni in the fourth over.

Kohli (109) and de Villiers (129 not out) scored 23 runs in the next two overs to push the total to 42 for one in six overs.

The pair continued to deal in boundaries and brought up a 50-run stand in 33 balls. At the halfway mark, the Royal Challengers Bangalore had 76 runs on the board for the loss of a wicket.

The tide turned in the 12th over where de Villiers smashed a six and two fours and raced away to a 25-ball fifty. De Villiers followed it up with two fours and two sixes in the next three overs.

In the same phase, Kohli went past a 39-ball fifty as well and took Royal Challengers Bangalore to 136 for one after 15 overs.

By smashing Kumar for 23 runs in the 16th over, de Villiers brought up a 43-ball century and followed it up with two more sixes in the 17th over.

The boundaries continued to rain down as Kohli and de Villiers scored 60 runs from the 18th and 19th overs combined.

With a six down the ground, Kohli brought up his third century of the season and followed it up with another big hit. Kohli and Shane Watson (0) fell in the last two balls of the innings.

Royal Challengers Bangalore blazed away to 248 for three in 20 overs, which was the second highest total in the history of the tournament.

The double strike in the last over ended the 229 run stand between Kohli and de Villiers, which was also the highest ever in the history of T20 cricket.

Gujarat Lions started off on the wrong foot as Dwayne Smith (7) fell in the second over, castled by Sreenath Aravind (1-15).

Ravindra Jadeja (21) started off strongly with two fours and a six. However, Royal Challengers Bangalore seized the big wicket of McCullum (11) in the fifth over, caught down the ground.

By the end of the powerplay, Gujarat Lions scored 41 for two. Royal Challengers Bangalore snared three wickets in the space of seven balls, seeing the back of Dinesh Karthik (2), Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo (1).

By the halfway mark, Gujarat Lions needed 195 runs for a win with five wickets in hand. Aaron Finch (37) began with two boundaries but Yuzvendra Chahal (3-19) castled Akshdeep Nath (3) in the 12th over.

Jordan struck twice once again in the 13th over, castling both Kumar (1) and Kulkarni (2). Pravin Tambe (7 not out) and Finch saw out 5.4 overs with the innings going nowhere for the Gujarat Lions.

In the 19th over, Sachin Baby (2-4) dismissed Finch and Shivil Kaushik (0) in consecutive balls to wrap up a 144-run win for the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This is the biggest winning margin in the history of the IPL. The win kept Royal Challengers Bangalore in the sixth position but boosted their net run rate to +0.627 from -0.041.

The Gujarat Lions also managed to stay on the second spot but their net run rate has fallen to -0.747 from -0.138. For his unbeaten hundred, de Villiers was the player of the match.
